After educating themselves consumers are able to request free quotes from multiple carriers. It pays to shop around and explore options. Remember, there is no one plan that is right for everyone. Each individual’s needs, and the needs of their family, are different. While health insurance is rarely cheap, affordable options are available. By selecting a plan that provides excellent coverage for the services that you will likely need, and limited coverage for those you won’t, you can limit your total costs. In Wyoming a variety of plans are available within the individual, group, and senior markets. Individuals, typically unemployed or self employed must not only select a carrier, but also a plan within that carrier. Members of groups (eg. Employer sponsored plans) typically select between a limited set of plans. Those over 65 are likely to participate in the federal Medicare program. However, even with Medicare, there are coverage gaps, and that is where Medicare Supplement plans can provide value. Regardless of the channel through which you obtain insurance, it is critical to get covered. Living without health insurance is a risk for you and your family that simply is not worth taking. The financial burden of an unexpected illness can be extreme. If you are unable to afford health insurance, or have been denied coverage, there may be government sponsored options available to you. Understanding Your Health Insurance Options

Below are various individual health insurance options available to residents of Wyoming:

  • HMO - The fundamental HMO model is based on controlling costs by routing all services through a primary care physician selected by the member within a network. Referrals for specialized services are made by this primary care physician. Some exceptions, including emergency services are excluded, but in general, appointments made directly with specialists are not reimbursed. Out of pocket expenses for HMOs tend to be lower in general than for other types of plans.
  • PPO - As with HMOs, members with PPO plans select providers from a within a network of contracted providers. Referrals to specialists are not required provided that the specialist is with the same network. Out of network providers can be utilized, but reimbursement for these charges are more limited. Flexibility is the primary benefit of a PPO plan.
  • POS - Point of Service plans are often described as hybrids of HMOs and PPOs, combining elements of both. In network services are most similar to an HMO while out of network services are reimbursed, but at a lower level.
  • CDHP - An attempt to return control to the consumer, these recently popular Consumer Directed Health Plans combine a high deductible insurance plan with a flexible spending account. The high deductible component protects the consumer against catastrophic health care expenses while routine expenses are paid using funds in the flexible spending account. Consumers are incentivized to reduce expenses since account balances typically roll over from one year to the next.
