How to find an affordable plan.

A recent article in the Salt Lake City Tribune featured a new phenomenon; doctors making house calls at work. Like milk being delivered to your doorstep or rotary dial phones, the thought of a doctor making a visit seems antiquated. But that is exactly what is happening more and more in the state of Utah. In an attempt to control costs and keep their employees healthy, companies are getting into the healthcare business like never before. The national average health insurance premium is $13,700, but businesses participating in this program have driven down their annual premium to less than $5,000 per employee. And with the cost of health care rising, it is no wonder that out of the box solutions like this are flourishing. Your employer may never implement a cost saving measure like this, or your employer may not offer health insurance coverage at all. There are still ways you can find an affordable health insurance plan that offer decent coverage.

How to Choose the Best Coverage

A type of policy that may be beneficial to Utah residents is individual insurance. Individual insurance can be affordable, portable and accessible to healthy individuals. Individual insurance is underwritten based on your health history, so the healthier you are the more affordable it is. With individual health insurance, you can configure benefits, deductibles and copayments to reach an affordable premium for you. Utah residents who are unable to get approved for individual health insurance due to preexisting conditions are in luck, because the state of Utah has developed a program called a "risk pool" to insure the uninsurable. Utah Comprehensive Health Insurance Pool (HIPUtah) is subsidized and offers an affordable premium and coverage to those who have been denied coverage.

If you've decided to get an individual or group health insurance policy, you'll need to decide what type of physician's network to use. There are two types available- PPO plans and HMO plans. PPO's are also referred to as Preferred Provider Organizations. PPO plans are comprised of a network of physicians who have agreed to work under contract with your health insurance company. With a PPO, you receive full benefits when working with physicians within this network. For a reduced benefit amount, you can choose to work with physicians and hospitals outside the network. Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO's) are more restrictive than PPO's. HMO's offer no insurance coverage should you work with a physician or hospital outside the insurance company's network of participating physicians.
