How to find an affordable plan.

Our goal here at Health Insurance Online is to provide residents of Tennessee with the information and resources they need to make informed health insurance decisions. A more informed consumer is better equipped to make the right decision when it comes time to select a plan. No single plan is right for everyone. Your age, health, financial position, and tolerance come into play when evaluating and selecting a plan. When you are ready to shop for a plan we can help. Simply complete the quote request form on this page and you will be connected with carriers and/or agents who will be able to provide you with free quotes based on your circumstances and needs. Whether you are uninsured currently or looking to replace your existing plan, we can help. If you are 65 or older we can also connect you with carriers who offer Medicare Supplement plans (also known as Medigap) to fill the gaps left by traditional Medicare. We also provide information and resources for those unable to obtain health insurance either because they cannot afford it, or have been denied coverage. Government sponsored programs may be available in these cases. Health insurance can be confusing, but we hope to make it a little less so.

Understanding Your Health Insurance Options

Below are various individual health insurance options available to residents of South Dakota:

  • HMOs - Offering less flexibility in return for typically lower costs, these plans route all services through a primary care physician. Referrals to specialists are made by this provider. With limited exceptions costs associated with visits to specialists without first being referred by the primary care physician are not reimbursed.
  • PPOs - Offering greater flexibility in return for typically higher costs and deductibles, these plans allow consumers to select doctors from within a network of providers, including specialists. Out of network providers can also be visited, but costs are typically reimbursed at much lower rates.
  • POS - Combining elements of both HMOs and PPOs, Point of Service plans are another option for consumers.
  • CDHP - Attempting to return control to the consumer, Consumer Directed Health Plans typically offer the greatest flexibility. A high deductible plan is combined with a flexible spending account that is used to cover medical expenses throughout the year.

Don’t Decide Based on Price Alone

Don’t make the mistake of selecting a health insurance plan based on price alone. Rather, you should select a plan based on the value it provides. Low premiums often come with higher deductibles and lower coverage for services. Ultimately you should look to limit your total health care expenses throughout the year. Plans with higher premiums may actually result in lower total expenses if those plans cover most, or all, of the costs associated with services you utilize throughout the year.
