How to find an affordable plan.

While Rhode Island health insurance is regulated by the state, there are numerous options for consumers looking for coverage. Multiple carriers (insurers) offer multiple plans throughout the state. For individuals fortunate enough to receive coverage through their employer, the decision may be as simple as selecting a plan from a limited set of options. For those who are self-employed, unemployed, or work for a company that does not provide health insurance benefits, there are more decisions to make. Health Insurance Online provides resources and information to consumers looking for coverage. This section of the site provides information on leading carriers in the state as well as government run programs. Selecting an affordable health insurance plan that best meets your needs involves understanding what the plan covers, and more importantly what it does not cover. In general, more expensive plans provide greater coverage and/or flexibility. Less expensive plans typically provide more limited coverage and/or flexibility. The goal is to understand your likely needs, and select a plan that most affordably meets those needs. For individuals not prepared to handle high out of pocket expenses throughout the year, HMOs are typically a good option. Costs are controlled by routing all services through a primary care physician. Those who would prefer lower monthly premiums and are able to handle the possibility of high out of pocket charges may determine that a high-deductible PPO is right for them. Regardless of the plan you select, it is important to obtain coverage. Living without health insurance exposes you and your family to unnecessary risk, both financial risk and health risk.

Don’t Decide Based on Price Alone

A common mistake when selecting a health insurance plan is making a decision based on price alone. If you select a low cost plan, it may not provide the coverage you need, and you may have high out of pocket expenses throughout the year. Selecting a higher cost plan may also be a mistake. Higher cost plans may cover services and procedures that you may be unlikely to utilize throughout the year. The right plan is different for everyone, but in general provides a balance between cost and services likely to be utilized throughout the year.
