How to find an affordable plan.

Many choices exist in the state of Michigan to help individuals and families to find an affordable health insurance plan. Choosing a health insurance plan is one of the most important decisions a person will ever have to make so it is important to do the proper research before making a selection. Knowing what to look for while shopping for a health insurance plan will keep individuals from making costly mistakes. Health Insurance Online offers free online resources to help consumers make an informed decision. Online searches can be a great place to start looking for health insurance companies in Michigan. The Internet allows individuals to get multiple health insurance quotes at one time from several different providers. This is a great strategy to compare the types of services and coverage offered by all of the companies that exist in the state of Michigan. Each provider offers detailed plan and policy information on their website that should help with making an informed decision. You can also find additional information like which doctors and hospitals are participants within the health network. The Internet is also useful for those who would rather speak to an insurance agent. Simply type in your zip code and you will be presented with a list of agents in your area. If you are currently employed, your company’s human resources department would be the best place to start your search. Many companies offer employer sponsored health plans and will provide the information necessary to select a plan that is best tailored to your needs. Word of mouth referrals can also be a useful tool when it comes to selecting a health insurance plan. Talking to friends and family about the intricacies of each plan will give you a better picture of how the plan may best fit your needs.

Types of Health Insurance Available in Michigan

Enrolling in health insurance has never been easier for residents of Michigan. Individual coverage can be purchased on your own or group health coverage can be obtained through an employer. Individual insurance can be purchased for those that do not have access to group coverage. With an individual plan you may purchase a policy that can cover you and your entire family. Your age, health condition, and the amount of coverage that you require all determine the cost of each plan. For individuals currently employed in Michigan, the majority are currently enrolled in an employer sponsored health plan. In this case the employer is the main policyholder and negotiates the group policy with the health carrier. The employer then has the option to change the benefits and coverage and determine the employee’s share of the premium cost. For those that are in between jobs there is a short term plan called COBRA. The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act or COBRA is a short-term coverage plan that keeps a previous employer’s policy running for a specified period of time so you are never without medical insurance in the interim period while searching for a new health plan.

The three most popular types of plans offered in Michigan are HMO, PPO, and Point of Service (or POS). HMO or Health Maintenance Organization is a policy that includes certain doctors and hospitals who have signed up to their plan to offer specific coverage at defined prices. The insured must pick from those physicians or institutions for their primary care and always use that particular doctor or hospital. Preferred Provider Organization or PPO's are similar except that they allow the insured to choose any doctor or hospital within their plan at any time and you will not be locked into one physician or office. PPO's are more flexible but usually more expensive as well. Point of Service (POS) health plans are what most people consider 'traditional' insurance coverage. You choose your doctors and hospitals without any lists, or concern over their participation in a particular plan and the insurance company pays a percentage of the bill and the balance is the responsibility of the insured.
