South Carolina Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap)

For seniors and low income individuals in the state of South Carolina who need health insurance for seniors the state Medicare department provides traditional Medicare in the form of Part A and Part B. These plans differ in that Medicare Part A is automatic for anyone that has reached retirement age, although individuals who have a disability or are in a low income bracket may need to apply for it. Medicare Part A is also a free program with no monthly payments. Even though it is free there are many out of pocket expenses with Medicare Part A and it has a very limited coverage. Medicare Part B must be applied for and does have monthly premiums that are taken automatically from social security checks. The coverage is much better although not all inclusive and there are still out of pocket costs that make it prohibitive for many seniors.

There are private companies that offer extended health insurance for seniors that are a part of the Medicare program but not available through the government. These plans do require monthly payments but cover much more than standard Medicare. There is also a program known as Medicap which is a Medicare supplemental insurance that helps cover the out of pocket costs of health care for seniors. Your Medicare case worker can help you determine what additional needs you have including the possible Medigap to help cover deductibles and co-payments, and Part D which provides prescription drug coverage.

Medicare Advantage plans often combine many of the Medicare supplemental insurance programs into one package so there is only one monthly premium to pay. That can make health insurance much easier for seniors and guarantee them the best medical care possible. For seniors, low income individuals, and those with disabilities who cannot afford extra payments it may be possible to get help from the South Carolina Medicaid office. The social security department, your Medicare caseworker, or Medicaid offices can provide more information on your eligibility.
