Idaho Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap)

There are health concerns that seniors have that they probably never had to worry about as younger people. New health issues create an increasing need for health insurance for seniors as well. The automatic government medical program, Medicare Part A, only covers a portion of the basic medical needs of senior citizens and it does not even touch prescription medication, which is one of the largest health costs for elderly people.

In order to ensure proper medical insurance coverage for all your health care needs as a person 65 or older you need to learn about Medicare supplemental insurance. One of the first Medicare supplements you should consider is Medicare Part B. It is paid for right from your social security checks so that you don't have to remember to make payments, and it extends many of the services of Medicare Part A. Supplemental insurance is not provided by the government. Programs like Medicare Part C, and D as well as Medigap coverage is handled by private insurance companies to cover the costs that Medicare does not pay.

Along with needing coverage for expenses not covered by Medicare seniors also find out quickly that standard Medicare has a deductible that must be paid even before any costs are covered. This means they may be liable for a large portion of their medical costs without any help if they haven't obtained Medigap or other insurances. Health insurance for seniors is fairly standard and most major medical companies in Idaho carry Medicare Advantage (Part C) and prescription drug coverage, Medicare Part D as a standard policy for the seniors of the state.

Idaho has extra provisions for health insurance for seniors, however, that are excellent. In 2007 Idaho began what they call the Medicare Coordinated plan which gives Medicaid assistance to seniors who still cannot manage to cover the left over costs even after supplemental insurance payments.

To find out if you are eligible for the Medicare Coordinated plan, or other Medicaid benefits contact your local Medicaid office or the Medicare home office.
