Hawaii Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap)

Medicare is basically the same all throughout the United States and even on the beautiful islands of Hawaii, and the one thing Hawaiians have in common with all members of the U.S. is that Medicare coverage is just as confusing no matter where you go. It would be nice to believe, as many do at first, that simple government provided Medicare Part A which is automatic when you reach retirement age covers everything and you won't ever have to worry about medical bills again… unfortunately that's not true as most seniors find out quickly.

There are huge gaps in what procedures are covered as well as large deductibles and co-payments—all of which quickly escalate the costs of medical care in our aging years. Medicare supplemental insurance is designed to take much of the sting out of those costs for individuals on a fixed income. Medicare Part B is provided through the same agency that provides the free Medicare Part A but there is a premium. Your payments can be made directly from your social security each month. Medicare Part C and D supplemental insurance is handled through private companies and is not a part of the government Medicare; however costs are kept at a reasonable rate so that seniors can afford it.

Medicare Part B extends the coverage of many procedures and Medicare Part C (also often called Medicare Advantage plans, or Medigap) helps bridge the gaps of what is not covered, and also deductibles and co-payments. Medicare Part D is an important supplement as it is the only coverage that handles prescription medicines for seniors. Medicine is one of the highest medical costs associated with aging and no one can really do without that vital supplement plan.

For any questions you might have concerning the different types of plans you can always call your Medicare office at 1-800-MEDICARE however be aware that the Medicare office does not provide supplemental insurance. They can help guide you through what you need and how they benefit you, but you will have to seek those additional health insurance policies from private sources.
