Anthem Blue Cross of California Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap)

Anthem Blue Cross of California offers a range of Medicare supplemental insurance plans (also called Medigap plans) to suit different needs. Because Anthem is a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), you have the flexibility to use the hospitals and health care providers of your choice, drawing from a provider network California residents area of over 50,000 members nationwide.

Anthem Blue Cross offers the following six Medigap policies in California:

1. Anthem ClaimFree Standard Plan A

Provides the most basic Medicare supplemental coverage.

2. Anthem Senior Classic C, F, I and J

Their most popular plans, providing coverage of the Medicare Part A and B deductibles when you use participating medical providers.

3. Anthem Senior SmartChoice (High Deductible Plan F)

Offers low monthly premiums and higher deductible rates.

4. Anthem Senior SmartChoice Preferred (High Deductible Plan F)

Provides the same benefits as the SmartChoice plan, plus $5 doctor visits and chiropractic and vision care benefits.

5. Anthem Senior SmartChoice PLUS (High Deductible Plan F with Rider)

Provides the same benefits as the SmartChoice plan, as well as home health care and support services and nursing facility care.

6. Anthem AdvantageCare

Offers additional benefits to the Anthem Senior Classic F Plan of up to $36,500 for residential or nursing facility and home health care.

Anthem supplemental insurance plans pay for most of the deductibles, into the thousands of dollars, that Medicare requires you to pay before offering coverage benefits. All of Anthem's Senior Classic plans for California residents pay the $1,024 deductible of Medicare Part A. All of these plans, except Anthem Senior Classic Plan I, also pay the Medicare Part B $135 annual deductible, as long as you choose a health care provider from Anthem Blue Cross' extensive list of Prudent Buyer Providers.

Anthem's SmartChoice plans for California residents offer the same comprehensive benefits as Senior Classic Plan F, its most popular plan. By raising the SmartChoice plan deductibles to $1,900 per year, Anthem is able to offer you a lower monthly premium. The SmartChoice Preferred vision care benefits include coverage of eyeglass lenses and frames, and the co-pay rate for each chiropractic visit is a flat $10. SmartChoice PLUS is ideal for members of Medicare Parts A and B who need greater coverage for California nursing facilities or in-home care.
