Medicaid

For eligible individuals, Medicaid -- a program sponsored by both the states and the federal government -- may provide coverage for long-term care, including skilled nursing care. Medicaid may also provide coverage for many types of durable medical equipment related to home health care (e.g., wheel chairs, walkers, braces), and for care in a nursing home, even when the services offered primarily involve personal care.

In some states, Medicaid may also provide coverage for some aspects of specialized senior citizens' day care programs. Such coverage may be available to senior citizens with physical disabilities and cognitive impairments due to a stroke, Alzheimer's disease, or other conditions or illnesses. Day care programs may include a wide range of services, including meals, transportation, and recreational activities.

Some day care programs for senior citizens may also offer help in ensuring that medication is taken properly and may offer supportive services to care for diabetes, high blood pressure, and other chronic conditions. Some programs may also offer activities that are designed to maximize existing cognitive abilities. Day care programs for senior citizens may be of enormous importance to individuals who have chronic conditions or disabilities, and may make it possible for some senior citizens to continue to live active, satisfying lives while remaining in their homes and in the community.
