Local fraternal or service organizations may also help parents purchase medical equipment for children with disabilities. Organizations such as the Telephone Pioneers -- a group made up of volunteers from various telephone companies -- may provide help with disability-related architectural or engineering projects (See Appendix B).
The local Independent Living Center may have information about other volunteer groups or other local sources of funding to meet the needs of children with disabilities. In addition, state governments offer a variety of special programs for children and adults with disabilities. In some states, that may include programs designed to provide health insurance, medical equipment, or help with the cost of prescription medications.
Unfortunately, it's often difficult to find out about such state programs because they may be offered through different agencies in different states, and may be offered through a number of different agencies within a particular state.
