At present, there are two different types of used equipment programs available through Tech Act agencies: equipment exchange and equipment recycling. Equipment exchange programs match people who have agreed to sell or donate durable medical equipment with people who need such equipment. The equipment is usually owned by individuals and generally remains in the individual's home until it is purchased.

The following states currently have equipment exchange programs: Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Equipment recycling programs involve equipment that is usually held in a storage area operated by the Tech Act program or by other organizations. Much of the equipment may have been donated by corporations, and it often includes computers and computer-related products.

The following states currently operate equipment recycling programs: Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, and Oklahoma. Some of those state programs focus only on computers and computer-related equipment. New programs are in the process of being developed in other states.
