While private health insurance policies may offer important benefits for people with disabilities, there may also be a number of limitations in terms of coverage. For example, while power wheelchairs are generally covered by health insurance policies, wheelchair lifts, ramps, and other wheelchair-related equipment may not be covered.
Although some states have passed laws dealing with health insurance coverage for specific items -- for example, for infant formula for children with specific types of disabilities who are unable to digest standard foods -- those laws apply only in certain situations and only in the states that have enacted such legislation. Private health insurance policies in states that have not enacted such legislation might not provide any coverage for items such as infant formula. If your child is affected by that limitation or by other rules or limitations, the solution may be to work with an advocacy or support group, a disability rights organization, or with legislative representatives to try to change the laws in your state.
