Private Health Insurance for Those with Disabilities

Part 4, Chapter 13: Specialized Situations: Programs for Children and Adults with Disabilities and Special Health Care Needs Page 9

Many people with disabilities may be covered by private health insurance policies, as well. In some cases, a private health insurance policy may serve as the primary insurer, with Medicaid as the secondary insurer.

However, it's sometimes difficult for people with disabilities to obtain health insurance. There are private organizations that offer health insurance programs that are designed specifically for people with disabilities. For example, The Arc -- a national organization on mental retardation -- offers a group health insurance plan designed to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities who are between the ages of 10 and 65 (See Appendix B for further information). However, there is no guarantee of acceptance in The Arc plan. Rather, the medical history and insurability of each applicant is individually evaluated. The Arc plan is offered on a national basis, and is available to residents of most states.

If your family is covered by a private health insurance policy, it's important to be aware that some private health insurance policies may allow for a permanent extension of health insurance for a child with a disability in certain cases, even after the point at which the child would usually be excluded from continued coverage on the basis of age. Check with your insurance company to determine the rules of your policy in regard to the continuation of health insurance coverage for a child with a disability.
