Summary
In some cases, a health insurance policy can be extended through COBRA, the Portability and Accountability Act, and the exercise of the conversion option offered by some group health insurance plans.
Using these mechanisms can make it possible for an individual to continue a health insurance policy for an extended period in situations in which the policy would normally end, without worrying about exclusions for pre-existing conditions or an immediate loss of benefits. Those situations may include divorce, changing jobs, or reaching the lifetime benefit maximum provided for in a health insurance policy.
