Summary

Over the past decade, the movement toward managed care has revolutionized health insurance in America. At this point, many people seem convinced that managed care programs will save significant amounts of money in the long run while continuing to provide excellent health care. Thus, such programs are likely to expand in the future, both in terms of employer -- sponsored health insurance plans and government -- sponsored plans such as Medicare, Medicaid, and CHAMPUS. As research on the effectiveness and the economics of managed care plans is completed, definitive answers should be available to questions about the managed care approach.
