Introduction

Note to the Reader
It's important for readers to understand that state and federal laws and regulations may change or may be reinterpreted periodically and that laws and regulations differ significantly from state to state. This book is designed to serve as a general guide to dealing with health insurance problems. However, readers should contact their state Department of Insurance and the organizations listed in the appendixes for up-to-date information about health insurance issues and recent changes in laws or regulations, as well as for advice in regard to specific problems. In addition, because of the complexity and the technical nature of the existing system of laws and regulations, the complexity of the current health insurance system, and the substantial differences between health insurance policies, it's essential for readers to discuss their specific health insurance problems with an appropriate state, federal, or private agency and with an attorney before making any decisions.
Getting in Touch with the Author
A book such as this that attempts to summarize enormous amounts of information about a field as complex as health insurance may overlook some important facts or some im portant issues. If you have comments or suggestions about this book, I'd very much like to hear from you.
Although it's not generally possible for me to reply individually to letters, I'll try to incorporate suggested changes in any future editions of this book. You can write to me at:
Address Withheld.
That address is only for comments and suggestions about the book. If you have a health insurance problem, and your local newspaper carries my nationally syndicated column ("Health Insurance TroubleShooter"), you can write to me about such problems in care of your local newspaper. I'll try to respond to as many health insurance questions as possible in the column. If your local paper does not carry the column, you can ask the editor to write to Globe Syndicate, 218 South Fairfax Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314.
