A Consumer's Guide to Vermont Health Insurance Introduction

Health insurance cost and coverage are important issues for consumers throughout Vermont and nationally. Choosing the best insurance policy to fit your needs can sometimes be a difficult task. Some of us may have health insurance provided by our employers; some may have to buy health insurance for our families and ourselves, while others may get it through Medicare or Medicaid.

There are many types of health insurance policies you can buy. These include traditional indemnity plans, managed care plans like HMOs, PPOs, POSs and newer customer-driven health plans that combine a High Deductible Heath Plan with a Health Savings Account (HSAs). There are public programs that pay for health care, like Medicare and Medicaid, which you may have instead of, or in addition to, other types of health insurance. You can also buy other types of health insurance that cover a narrower range of services. These policies include accident, dental, disability, Medicare supplement, and long-term care insurance.

This booklet, developed by the Vermont Division of Health Care Administration, helps you understand the different types of health insurance policies available to you and what to expect once you have health insurance. We hope that this booklet can help you choose the kind of coverage that is right for you and your family.
