AIDS Drug Assistance Program Reopens in North Carolina

As a result of Governor Bev Perdue's recommended budget and with the support of the General Assembly, North Carolina's AIDS Drug Assistance Program has recently reopened. The $14 million appropriation will allow the program not only to continue to serve nearly 5,000 enrollees, but also will open the program to an additional 627 people who have been on a waiting list since January "Continued state funding for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program recognizes the great importance of providing people with critical medication that prevents progression to AIDS and decreases the spread of HIV," said State Health Director Jeff Engel. The AIDS Drug Assistance Programuses a combination of state and federal funds to provide low-income residents of North Carolina with assistance in obtaining essential medications at no cost. The program purchases the medications in bulk from a pharmaceutical wholesaler, and a central pharmacy dispenses and mails prescriptions to clients. The individual is responsible for the cost of other drugs that they receive which are not covered by the program.
