New Mexico Budget Cuts Could Mean Less Health Spending

Gov. Bill Richardson's administration said recently it will cut spending on New Mexico programs and services, including public schools, by about three percent to help erase a budget shortfall caused by lower-than-expected revenues in the newly started fiscal year. Katherine Miller, secretary of the Department of Finance and Administration, said the cuts will begin in September and will apply to all parts of state government, except Medicaid and some services to the developmentally disabled. The judiciary and the Legislature will share in the latest round of reductions. Miller made her comments as she and other administration officials outlined an updated financial forecast that showed the state with a more than $200 million budget shortfall in the fiscal year that started this month. Revenues are projected to be almost $160 million lower than what had been anticipated this year, and $32 million short in the fiscal year that ended in June.

Major medical expenses can create financial havoc for a family. One single dose of chemotherapy can run as much as $3,000.00 and a single night in the hospital for a minor accident can top several thousand including with care and medications. Test costs for routine physical examinations are out of reach for the average working person and family child care that is such a vital part of a healthy childhood is astronomical. It is easy to see why having affordable health insurance is so important but finding the coverage that fits your needs is usually confusing.

Because most people are unsure of what policy is really the right one for them they often just point and choose a policy and hope they chose right. Other people will select a health insurance policy based on cost which is understandable because a health insurance policy is only as good as what you can afford to keep in effect, but if that policy does not cover your needs you may as well be throwing even that little bit of money into the wind.

Families with individuals over the age of 65 need extra Medicare Part B coverage. Often people think that Medicare on its own will pay for everything but it will only meet part of their health care needs leaving them at a loss for how to pay the remainder of the bills if they aren't covered by supplemental Medicare health care.

Your best bet for finding affordable health insurance is to use the Internet to get health insurance quotes and compare all of the available plans in your area. You will be asked for the region, state, or city you live in so that the results you get are tailored to the state you live in because health insurance regulations require companies to be licensed in each state they provide coverage for. That is why you cannot just point and pick from any company. You have to know if they have policies for people living in your state.
