Members of households headed by the self-employed individuals have the highest rate of uninsurance (21.8 percent), while those in households headed by a worker in the public sector have the lowest rate, 6.3 percent. Family members of workers in the private sector have an uninsured rate of 10.1 percent, however rates vary greatly based on the size of the firm. In general, the fewer employees, the more likely it is that workers and their families will be uninsured.

Individuals in households headed by a worker in any size of private sector firm in Michigan are less likely to be uninsured than those in similar situations in the rest of the nation. Families of self-employed and public sector workers are also less likely to be uninsured in Michigan than in the rest of the nation.

In general, the larger the business in which a head of household works, the less likely it is that members of the household will be uninsured.
