Maine Residents Warned of Contaminated Shellfish
With elevated levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning (also known as red tide poisoning and PSP) causing many areas of the coastline to be closed to commercial harvesting for some shellfish, and with especially high levels detected recently in the lower eastern area of the state, Maine CDC in the Department of Health and Human Services and the Maine Department of Marine Resources are reminding residents and tourists of recommendations for the safe consumption of shellfish. Advisories against eating tomalley have been in effect for years in Maine, neighboring states, and by U.S. Food and Drug Administration, mostly due to the presence of PCB toxins, and more recently due to PSP. It is important to note that testing has shown lobster meat is safe to eat. Tomalley is the soft, green substance found in the body cavity of the lobster and functions as the liver. Much like the liver of other animals, the tomalley serves as a natural filter for contaminants that are in the water. Paralytic shellfish poisoning is a marine biotoxin that is associated with certain types of algae blooms in coastal waters. Bivalve shellfish such as clams, mussels, oysters, and quahogs filter water and eat the toxic algae from the water. High concentrations of the toxin in these types of shellfish can then cause serious illness or even death if eaten by humans.

Just because choosing health insurance and looking for the cheapest most affordable health insurance quotes is complicated is not a good reason to put it off. In fact, delay can be deadly, or at the least financially devastating. It really does not have to be a difficult endeavor. Knowing what to look for and how to find quotes is the first step in making intelligent choices that will protect your family's most important asset—their health.
Where to Start Looking for Health Insurance in Maine
Start out by searching online for health insurance quotes. You can get information on multiple companies at once saving you valuable time and to make it easy to compare the differences between policies.
Understand the terminology. That is where most people throw up their hands in frustration. The important facts are not as hard to understand as they appear. There are three main types of health insurance coverage and most are easily recognizable by name: HMO, PPO, and POS (point of service). Most people recognize HMO and PPO although many do not understand the difference between the two. POS is a term that is less common but what it is defines what most people think of as 'traditional' health insurance coverage where they are free to pick any physician or hospital and the insurance company pays a percentage of the bill leaving the rest for them to pay out of pocket.
POS policies are usually the most expensive health insurance coverage you can choose although they are also the most liberating and offer the most choices.
HMO and PPO are much more common because they often provide the lowest health insurance rates. Both HMO and PPO work in a similar fashion as they both provide a list of doctors and hospitals included in the coverage plan. That is what confuses the average insurance shopper but HMO is more restrictive in that the policy holder will have to select a primary physician and hospital facility and use them at all times where the PPO allows more flexibility in giving the option of choosing from any of the providers at anytime. PPOs are usually a little more expensive but are popular for the extra latitude they give patients in deciding their own care.
Major Maine Health Insurers
Two of the largest health care providers in Maine are Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Aetna Health Care. Choosing from a national company offers some extra benefits for patients because of a large body of policy holders making it possible to offer lower health insurance costs and a wider variety of coverages than many local providers.
Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield is easily recognized as a leading health care provider and you will find all of the possible types of health insurance offered under their plans in addition to many special needs coverage types including Medicare Part B, dental, vision, and prescription medicine coverage.
Aetna is a company that often vies for popularity with BCBS and is known for its cheap health insurance rates with extensive coverage. Choosing a major corporation can have some limits in regards to personal service but both companies have a wonderful customer service help center as well as well-developed websites to give extensive information on all of their plans, services, and community concerns.
Make sure you check your local health insurance agents as well for quotes because having someone you can go to in person is a comforting thought when you need help getting information, or sorting out issues with your policy. Ask a lot of questions and make sure you completely understand the policies being offered.
Statistics show that about ½ of the bankruptcy cases filed in the United States are because of excessive medical bills. It doesn't take much for the costs to add up and leave your family in jeopardy. Get the affordable health insurance coverage you need to provide a safe and healthy life for you and your family and don't put off getting the information you need to find it.
