Kansans Warned to Beat the Heat and Stay Healthy

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is reminding Kansans to protect themselves in these hot summer temperatures. "The Kansas Department of Health and Environment advises the best defense against heat-related illness is prevention," said Roderick Bremby, Secretary of The Kansas Department of Health and Environment. "Staying cool and making simple changes in your fluid intake, activities, and clothing during hot weather can help you remain safe and healthy." Heat is the number one weather-related killer in the country. The National Weather Service has data which shows that heat causes more fatalities per year than floods, lightning, tornadoes and hurricanes combined. "When temperatures start to rise, it's important to know how to protect yourself and others, especially those who are at greater risk of heat-related illness," said Dr. Jason Eberhart-Phillips, State Health Officer and Director of The Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Division of Health. "If you have a friend, relative or neighbor who doesn't have air-conditioning, now would be a good time to talk with them about getting into a cooler place."

Knowing what to look for when shopping for affordable health insurance will keep you from making costly mistakes. There's nothing more important than your family's health and health insurance needs to be affordable so that you can keep it from lapsing. However, just as important as the monthly cost is what a policy will, or will not cover.

When you are looking for your Kansas health insurance policy find out if there is a maximum on the coverage you are considering. If there is a catastrophic illness maximum you could be caught short on a long-term illness that can cause an extreme financial catastrophe of its own. If there is a yearly maximum you might find yourself having to delay important treatments until the following year. That can cause difficulties in treatment, and even treatment failure that will leave you or a family member in serious condition.

Find out if your policy will cover office visits for doctor's appointments. Checkups are a vital part of health care and help to catch many serious problems before they are unmanageable. If your health insurance does not cover doctor's visits you might find yourself putting off those vital visits and learning too late about a serious problem.

BlueCross BlueShield of Kansas City is an excellent place to start your health insurance search. You can get quotes online that will let you compare their various health care programs with others and see where a full-service health care provider can give you maximum benefits for your health insurance dollars spent. BlueCross BlueShield also has all of the possible extra provisions that will save you hundreds of dollars a year on vision, dental, and prescription medicines.

Aetna is also a nationwide health insurance provider that offers the major health care programs and extra coverage like Medicare Part B and normal family extras to cover vision and dental requirements. Choosing a plan that will meet your family's needs is important too and Aetna has excellent full plans like HMO and PPOs as well as savings plans if you feel you do not need constant coverage but want to be sure you have enough put aside should a major problem arise.

Health care savings plans are one way to provide an affordable solution to health care needs but they are generally not a good option for young families with small children. The need for consistent well child care office visits can run into thousands of dollars a year not to mention the normal emergency care that you will be happy to know you have when your child spikes a fever in the middle of the night. Nothing is more important than the health and safety of your children and you will be able to rest easy knowing you will always be able to provide the best of medical care without destroying your family's financial well-being.
