Hawaiians Warned of Salmonella Risks
The Hawaii State Department of Health has confirmed ten cases of illness occurring on O'ahu caused by the Salmonella Paratyphi B infection related to eating previously frozen internationally imported raw ahi. The ill individuals reported eating raw ahi (often prepared as poke) purchased or served at various locations around O'ahu. Recently, there were 13 laboratory confirmed cases with the same S. Paratyphi B pattern in five other states, including California, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New York. The Hawaii State Department of Health is working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the other states to identify if those cases were also exposed to raw ahi. The Hawaii State Department of Health has informed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and requested an investigation of international sources of frozen raw ahi. "The Department of Health is concerned about these cases that are similar to a cluster of cases we investigated two years ago," Health Director Dr. Chiyome Fukino said. "With the help of the USFDA, we hope to identify the source so we can prevent any further illness."

When you look for affordable health insurance plans it is a good idea to know what out of pocket expenses are normal and how they will impact your costs. This will help you determine which type of policy will be best for you. There is more than just the monthly costs to consider although most people will choose the lowest premium when selecting a health insurance company. That seems like the smart move, and it is true that if you cannot afford the monthly premium cost a health insurance plan will be of little use to you. At the same time if the health insurance you choose doesn't not cover your needs, or has a lot of high out of pocket expenses you are wasting the money you spend every month to keep it.
The most common types of out of pocket expense in a health insurance policy is the co-pay. This is the amount you will pay at every instance you seek medical care whether it is a doctor's visit, or a hospital stay. Most times that co-pay is relatively low but with some of the cheaper health insurance policies it is quite high. Knowing ahead of time what those costs will be can help you determine if it's a good idea for you.
The deductible is the next most common extra cost of a health insurance policy. This is the amount you must pay before you will receive any help paying your medical bills from your insurance company. Some health insurance quotes offer very low rates in exchange for a high deductible. Such expenses are usually renewable yearly so even if you pay the full deductible in one year as soon as the new calendar year begins you will have to pay it over again before you get further assistance from your health insurance.
Most people feel it is a wiser investment to pay a fair premium monthly to have a small or no co-pay and deductible. If you pay for cheaper health insurance but can't afford to pay the out of pocket expenses you will probably end up putting off important doctor's visits and even emergency care in order to avoid astronomical bills.
Kaiser Permanente of Hawaii offers residents of the islands excellent health insurance quotes on most types of plans.
