Possible Tainted Well Water Affecting the Health of Alaskans

several North Pole gardeners are giving samples for a test to determine levels of sulfolane in their plants. The industrial solvent was found in wells close to the Flint Hills refinery last fall. The samples come from areas with groundwater contaminated by sulfolane. The goal of this project is to see if plants cultivated with affected well water show a presence of any sulfolane, and if so, how much. The Alaska Departments of Environmental Conservation (DEC) as well as the Health and Social Services (DHSS) are overseeing the test and recently participants have been giving them samples. These include fast-growing vegetables like leaf lettuce, rhubarb and zucchini. The samples are then being sent to a Minneapolis lab and results will be available soon. The purpose of the garden sampling project is to provide feedback to the gardeners and the public during this summer's growing season. Results on individual samples will be given to participants. Overall results will be made public, but without identifying participants.

Alaska offers some unique quandaries for those looking for affordable health insurance. While the major cities have excellent health care facilities and plenty of doctors if you live in one of the more remote areas of Alaska you have some definitely original needs as compared to areas in the continental United States. Even though Alaska presents some challenging health care situations the health insurance providers that are available are basically the same as what is available elsewhere in the U.S. Many major health insurance providers that have nationwide coverage also offer policies to those living in Alaska. The best way to find health insurance quotes no matter where you live is by searching online. This allows you to compare the various points and cost of each policy without pressure and usually all in one place.

If you live in one of the remote areas of Alaska one thing you will want to be sure your health insurance quote includes is emergency medical transportation. Even though most of the smaller towns and villages have medical stations the need to be transported to a major city is more common in rural areas such as Alaska than it is in other states.

Aetna health insurance has all of the major types of health insurance coverage to choose from and their nationwide corporation helps to keep the costs low.

Another well respected company with nationwide coverage that is available to Alaskan residents is Golden Rule. They help keep costs down by offering flexible plans with varying deductibles that you can choose to keep your costs down as well as optional co-payments. Higher deductibles and co-payments can be a good option for individuals or those who don't see doctors often. If you choose a plan like that to keep your monthly premiums down make sure you set aside a fair amount of money to help pay the out of pocket expenses of your policy.

Another option for some people is a health savings plan. Unlike a regular health insurance plan these do not pay a percentage of your care what they do is allow you to put money into a savings account so that you have it when you need medical attention. The downside to health savings plans is that few people can save enough to offset a major medical emergency or long term illness. A health savings plan is not a good idea for anyone who engages in dangerous activities, has existing health issues, or past history of health problems, and it is not a good idea for families with small children. Always consider how your health insurance plan will work for your unique situation rather than just how much it will cost up front.
