Health insurance is your protection against financial loss. In the event of a medical emergency, a routine doctor visit, or prescription needs, your Nevada health insurance is there to guarantee that you can receive the medical care that you or your family needs. Without adequate health insurance, you may not be able to afford the medical care that you need. With Online Health Insurance, you will learn how to understand your health insurance policy and what to look for when purchasing your policy.

The Basics on Nevada Health Insurance

Finding an affordable health insurance policy can sometimes be a grueling process, at Online Health Insurance, we do our best to make it easier for you to find cheap health insurance. As with any policy, contract, or agreement, taking the time to understand your health insurance policy many not only help you maximize your benefits, it just may keep you from making some of the costliest mistakes of your life. Purchasing health insurance that you don’t know how to use or doesn’t adequately meet your health needs can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills. Below are some key terms that will make understanding your health insurance policy easier.

  • Premium – payments made monthly or annually in order to purchase health insurance.
  • Co-Pay – a fixed portion of payments made by the policyholder on any medical needs. Often times the policyholder will pay a 20 percent co-payment and the insurance company will be responsible for the 80 percent remainder. After the deductible is met, the policyholder is only responsible for this portion.
  • Deductible – out-of-pocket expenses up to an agreed amount each year before the insurance policy becomes effective. After this deductible is met, policyholders are responsible only for co-payments.
  • Pre-Existing Conditions – are medical conditions that are/were present before the policyholder applied for medical coverage. Your insurance company may or may not choose to cover these conditions for a period of time.
  • PPO/POS – a Preferred Provider Organization is typically a more expensive, but extremely flexible insurance plan preferred by the majority of Americans. This organization allows policyholders to choose their doctors in or outside of the preferred “network”. Outside of the PPO, co-payments are generally much higher. A Point-of-Service provides the same benefits of a PPO, only requiring the policyholder to appoint a Primary Care Physician (main doctor).
  • HMO – a Health Maintenance Organization is only similar to traditional health insurance by requiring co-payments and yearly deductibles. Within an HMO, care providers are contracted for their services at a lower rate. If a policyholder chooses not to seek out care within the network, they may be responsible for the majority if not all of the costs. HMOs are typically less expensive, but also less flexible.
  • HSA – A Health Savings Account is a savings account that allows policyholders to put away pre-tax monies for medical needs such as co-payments, medical costs, and other costs that may or may not be covered in your Indiana health insurance policy.

Understanding these terms will help you as you search for affordable health insurance. You will be able to ask informed questions and make educated decisions in choosing your health insurance provider. *Please contact your health insurance provider if you have any questions concerning your policy.

Affordable Nevada Health Insurance

Despite the fact that health insurance rates vary by a variety of factors related to your age, previous health, unhealthy habits (e.g.: smoking), employment, and other details, Online Health Insurance can help you find accurate information and health insurance quotes. In some cases, your age or a previous health condition may present a high risk for your health insurance provider – with most insurance companies, smoking policyholders are required to pay an additional fee due to heightened medicals risks.

As with most states, Nevada offers a variety of federally funded programs designed to help individuals and families in need of insurance as well as many local and national health insurance providers. Health Plan of Nevada (HPN) is the oldest health maintenance organization (HMO) in Nevada, established in 1982. An HMO is a private network of healthcare providers who have contracted their services at a lower price for policyholders under their care (see above for detailed description). Though the majority of Americans choose Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO), an HMO such as Health Plan of Nevada can potentially offer policies at a much lower cost to the policyholder.

Assurant Health, formerly known as Fortis Health Insurance, offers PPO networks for policyholders. As part of a PPO, policyholders have the flexibility to choose from a larger field of healthcare providers and, again, though it is generally more expensive than an HMO like Health Plan of Nevada, the majority of Americans choose Assurant Health (Fortis Health) and other companies with PPO networks for their flexible and affordable health insurance.

Nevada Medicaid is a federal program that provides health care services for individuals qualifying as low-income based on both state and federal laws. Medicaid pays medical providers directly rather than reimbursing individuals. Unlike Medicaid, Nevada Medicare is available for almost anyone considered disabled by the federal Social Security Administration and anyone over the age of 65. The Nevada Check-Up was created for families who don’t qualify for Medicaid, with income levels at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Individuals and/or families qualifying for the Nevada Check-Up pay a small premium based on income. The state of Nevada also offers State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), a federally funded volunteer program that offers free assistance, information, and counseling for individuals and families on the Medicare program. Spanish speaking volunteers are also available in Southern Nevada. For more information, visit the state of Nevada website.

Finding Cheap Health Insurance

There are a variety of places you can look when you begin your initial search for health insurance quotes. At Online Health Insurance, we search for you and compare quotes from a wealth of health insurance companies. If you want to know more about an HMO network provider like Health Plan of Nevada, contacting an agent is absolutely free and you are under no obligation to purchase a plan. If you’re interested in purchasing a PPO plan like those offered at Assurant (Fortis Health), it is also as simple as requesting a health insurance quote – absolutely free with no obligations.

Your health insurance quote is based on the information you give to Online Health Insurance or any given health insurance company. If you are looking simply for cheap health insurance for yourself, you will be given a quote for an individual plan. Should you need coverage for a spouse and/or children, you have a few options including purchasing a family plan or several individual plans. If you’re 65 or older, you may qualify for Nevada Medicare. Whether or not your employer offers cheap health insurance will also affect your quote. Without employee insurance, you will need to purchase your own plan, but if your employer does offer benefits, you may want to look into supplemental insurance. How affordable your health insurance is will also be based on what supplemental insurance, if any, that you decide to purchase. Supplemental insurance is the process of adding additional benefits, or coverage, to your policy including behavioral medical treatments, dental, pregnancy care, and a variety of other areas your current policy may not cover.

Depending on what you consider less expensive, purchasing cheap health insurance will also depend on whether you decide to pay more in monthly premiums or yearly deductibles. As you continue to add supplementary insurance, or additional benefits, your cost for health insurance companies will increase as well as the potential risk of insuring your and/or your dependants. Choosing a higher deductible can be much less expensive if you are relatively healthy and do not need anything throughout the year aside from annual checkups. The risk with a higher deductible is if you should need an unexpected or emergency medical need that surpasses what you budgeted for. You are then responsible for paying up to your high deductible before your health insurance begins paying for your medical costs. In contrast, with a higher monthly premium, depending on how much medical care you need throughout the year, it may be much less expensive to pay higher premiums than relying on the chance that you will not need to meet such a high deductible.

If you are still unsuccessful in finding affordable health insurance after searching Online Health Insurance and/or speaking with agents from PPO providers such as Assurant (Fortis Health) or HMO providers such as Health Plan of Nevada, you may want to check out SHIP, the state of Nevada website, or contact your local state office to see if you qualify for Medicaid or Medicare.
