With our presidential election now over, and president-elect Obama ready to take office soon, one of the things that our new president-elect and our government is being begged to do by our populace is to revamp and reform our current health care and health insurance systems. With that in mind, I found a few articles that talk about possible changes under a new president and a mostly-Democratic house and senate.

The first article comes from the news section of Health.com and is entitled, “Obama’s Health-Care Plan: What’s in Store for the Nation?” This useful article dissects all of the campaign promises made during the election and puts them into an easy to read format. For example, all children will be required to have health insurance. Low-income families will receive income-related subsidies to help pay for affordable health insurance premiums. Laws would be strengthened to help fight against malpractice suits. This article has a lot of information, one of the most interesting is for the government to deal directly with pharmaceutical companies on prices for drugs, which takes us to our next article…

Our next article comes to us from CNN Money and is entitled, “Democratic Party Victory Could Mean Pressure On Drug Makers.” According to the article, as part of president-elect Obama’s drug plan, he would eliminate a provision that doesn’t allow Medicare to directly negotiate with drug companies to lower prices, something that would help put us on a fast-track to universal health coverage. The benefit for everyone, including drug companies, is that wider usage of prescription drugs due to expanded coverage would help offset the lower prices that are inevitable out of this type of plan.

While drug companies are opposed to this sort of legislature, one can see the benefits of this fitting into the puzzle that is universal health care coverage. The article warns that the new administration might put health care on the backburner due to the ongoing financial crisis, however, and hopes that the Obama administration keeps itself focused on its promises. Only time will tell, but I think most of us are hopeful that change will occur eventually.

This concludes this installment of the Weekly Health Insurance News Roundup. I hope you found it entertaining and informative, and wish you a happy and healthy day.
